ABOUT
CATHLEEN'S CABIN

Cathleen's Cabin is a 3 bedroom static caravan situated in beautiful surroundings in Dunoon.

The cabin can provide a break or getaway for individuals or families who are experiencing challenges in their lives.

The caravan is fully kitted out with all creature comforts, including books and games, and even a Wii. It can sleep up to 8 people.

Cathleen's Cabin has so far provided many weeks enjoyment and respite for those who need it and has been hosting families and individuals since 2010.

Many of those who come to us are referred through Rachel House Children's Hospice in Kinross and Robin House Children's Hospice in Balloch but we also take referrals from other sources.

We are very aware that families experiencing ill health or convalescence are often affected by ecomonic hardship and sometimes this makes getting away on holiday very difficult, despite the benefits it could bring.

Cathleen's Cabin is a possible answer to this. All we ask is that guests pay a small contribution of £10 a day per group (please see later section "How It Works" for more info).

Please do not hesitate to get in touch to make an enquiry.

Some people who might benefit from the calm or the fun at Cathleen’s Cabin are:

• The whole family, patient, brothers and sisters, mum and dad and even grandparents if they want to come

• While your child is in respite care, the rest of the family might want a wee respite break too

• Mum and dad (or a single parent with a friend or two), might need time on their own

• For the first 5 years of bereavement

• Other persons identified as in need of recuperation irrespective of age

At Cathleen’s Cabin you can find lots of entertainment on site and various attractions within the local countryside.

Equally, you can simply come for peace and quiet, sit on the porch and read a book while watching the hills and at night watch the stars with a late supper.

Most Important Rule - Have A Wonderful Time!

HOW IT WORKS

We can provide Cathleen's Cabin for stays of between 2 and 7 nights for up to 8 people, all year round.

One clean, well-behaved dog is also allowed to come on holiday.

All we ask is that guests meet the costs of their own gas and electricity use, which is currently £10 per day per group.

The lovely people at Hunter's Quay have donated special passes for the use of families staying at Cathleen's Cabin, allowing them free access to the leisure complex.

If you would like to come on holiday to Cathleen's Cabin please complete the application form and send to cathleenscabin@outlook.com

If you are currently using the services of one of Scotland's Hospices this is all that is required.

If you have heard from us from somewhere else we also request a letter explaining why you feel you should be considered for a holiday at Cathleen's Cabin.

If you have any queries or require help completing the form please just get in touch by phone or email.

When your application has been approved and your dates confirmed you will be contacted a few days before your arrival date to arrange when it is mutually convenient for you to arrive. You will be greeted at the site and shown round.

Once you are at Cathleen's Cabin on Dunoon we have people that can help in the case of a medical emergency or if you need any other support such as arranging inclusive sports or activites for the children or just a listening ear.

Our aim is to make your break as relaxing and special as possible so please let us know of any needs, requirements or concerns you may have and we will do our best to help with these.

Cathleen's Cabin is wheelchair accessible, with no stairs for access to or within the caravan. It was specially chosen as it has no central island unit within the lounge/kitchen area meaning wheelchairs can get about easily. There is also a large storage wardrobe within the main bedroom which can be used for respirators and general medical equipment.

While all applications are considered by the trustees we cannot guarantee that everyone who applies can be offered a holiday. Priority will always be given to those families who have a child attending one of Scotland's hospices. All other applications are decided upon by needs basis and availability. A referral does not place an obligation on Cathleen's Cabin to offer a holiday.

Please get in touch if you have any questions and we would be happy to have a chat with you about any needs or requirements you may have.

THE MCCARTHYS

THE HISTORY OF
CATHLEEN'S CABIN

Cathleen & Patrick McCarthy had 10 children who they took on holiday each year because they believed in the holistic benefit to each child, as well as the whole family, of a family holiday.

During her latter days Cathleen would often speak of holidays when her children were young and how each child benefitted from the holiday and how she and Pat also did. The memories seemed to bring back as many happy thoughts as did the original holidays.

In memory of her mother and recalling how much those holidays meant to her brothers, sisters and herself, Cathleen's Cabin founder, Maddie, decided to purchase a caravan “Doon the Watter” so that other families might also have happy memories.

If you would like to use the caravan please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available dates.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT CATHLEEN'S CABIN

Please note: in some cases names have been changed

The MacNair Family

“Thanks for allowing us the use of the caravan for six days. Once again everyone had a great time and the weather was superb.

We took trips to Oban and Callander and very nice days out was had, bit of travel was involved but the scenery was fab and time went by pretty quick.

The campsite was excellent again and the staff were first class. Caravan was outstanding, especially the barbeque!!

On behalf of the family thanks once again.”

Jean & Iain

We did get out on a couple of days. We went on beautiful drives around Dunoon.

We have enjoyed our stay very much."

The Haq Family

"Thank you very much for our holidays. We made the most of the time we were here, despite the weather.

Sabeel had a great time, going to the venue every day and spending my pennies.

We really appreciate what your do for Rachel House families."

The Roberts Family

"Thank you so much for having us down to stay, you made us feel so welcome.

The caravan park is so nice and clean. The people were very welcoming. We loved the amenities, the bar and grill was great value for money and the staff were lovely. The meals were great.

Kaitlin loved the swimming and the beach.

We all had a great time and a much appreciated rest."

SPECIAL THANKS

A huge thank you to Mazars who gifted Cathleen's Cabin a corporate donation of £600.

We were then bowled over once more when the Glasgow offices put on a special fundraiser raising £1033.40 at Christmas.

The money raised will go directly to helping more families get away to Dunoon in 2016.

We were delighted to be awarded a grant from Scotmid Co-operative of £500.

The decking at Cathleen's Cabin had a hard time and was damaged with all the adverse Scottish weather in 2015!

This money will be used to repair the decking, making it safe and smooth for wheelchair visitors once more. Thank you Scotmid Co-operative!

We are also so grateful to the wonderful Marie Ann Kerr who took part in the 5k Santa Dash in Glasgow in December 2015.

She looks extremely "dashing" in her outfit and we are extremely thankful for the funds which will help support more families needing a break.
